ECOWAS Maintains Open Borders for Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger Following Exit
Even though Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have officially withdrawn from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the regional organization has announced that citizens and businesses from these nations will still enjoy vital privileges such as visa-free travel, trade benefits, and passport acknowledgment.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, ECOWAS reiterated its commitment to regional solidarity, calling on both member and non-member authorities to continue recognizing passports and identity cards that display the ECOWAS logo for citizens of the three countries “until further notice.”
The statement emphasized, “The ECOWAS Authority has chosen to keep its doors open in the spirit of regional cooperation and for the welfare of our people. These actions are essential to avoid confusion and disruptions in the lives and businesses of our citizens during this transitional phase.”
Additionally, ECOWAS stated that goods and services from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger will continue to be handled under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS) and investment policies.
The organization also urged ongoing support and collaboration from officials of the three nations as they fulfill their roles within the Community.
These provisional measures will remain in place until the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government develops a framework for future relations with the three countries. A special structure has been established to guide discussions regarding the subsequent steps.
