HERDSMEN KILL FIVE WORKERS IN AN ONDO COMMUNITY
Suspected herdsmen have killed five individuals in the Ajegunle-Powerline community within the Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The victims were reportedly laborers brought in from Plateau and Kaduna states.
A local farmer, Akin Olowolafe, stated that the attack occurred on Tuesday around 3 PM. He said, “These herdsmen killed five of our laborers. We have reported their actions to the state government and security agencies, but no effective measures have been taken to curb the herdsmen's activities on our farms.
“They entered our farmlands on Tuesday while we were working, began firing shots into the air, and killed five people during the assault.” Olowolafe expressed that the ongoing activities of herdsmen and armed robbers have made life intolerable for the community. He claimed that many farmers have abandoned their farms out of fear for their safety due to the continuous destruction of their crops.
Laborer Fidelis Daniel recounted, “They (herdsmen) arrived around 3 PM on Tuesday to vandalize our farms. We had warned them not to come onto our land again, but they ignored us. When they came, they just started shooting and killed five of our people. We took the bodies to the mortuary.
“I was also working in the field when it happened. I heard gunshots and ran to the house. It was only by God's grace that I wasn't killed. They came armed, destroyed our crops, and took five lives—three from Plateau State and two from Kaduna State.”
Daniel urged Commissioner of Police Wilfred Afolabi and the Commander of the State Security Network Agency (Amotekun Corps) Adetunji Adeleye, along with other relevant agencies, to implement proactive security measures to end the daily threats and attacks, which are greatly diminishing the morale of local farmers.
Members of the Hunters and Vigilantes Association in Akure North Local Government Area reportedly transported the bodies of the deceased laborers to the mortuary.
Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, confirmed the incident, stating, “There was an attack on the community, and the police are still investigating. However, I cannot confirm the number of casualties at this time.”
