IPAC Calls for Sowore's Release, Accuses Authorities of Political Detention
ABUJA – The Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has urgently called for the immediate and unconditional release of Omoyele Sowore, National Chairman of the African Action Congress (AAC) and 2023 presidential candidate, following his detention by police after an invitation for questioning.
IPAC stated, “The Police must carry out their duties within the confines of the law and should not assume extralegal powers.”
Sowore is currently held at the Force Intelligence Department (FID) in Abuja after he could not fulfill what he deemed onerous bail conditions, such as providing a Grade Level 16 civil servant as surety.
“It is essential for justice, fairness, equity, and good conscience to release Sowore immediately or formally charge him. Freedom of speech is a fundamental right for all citizens.
“Our democracy can thrive only when individuals can express their opinions without the fear of police arrest, detention, or brutality.”
Additionally, IPAC emphasized, “We demand his unconditional release, as his continued detention constitutes a blatant violation of his rights as enshrined in the amended 1999 Constitution.”
The council has also urged President Bola Tinubu to step in, noting that Sowore’s plight stems from his opposition to the extension of the Inspector General of Police’s tenure and calls for better accountability.
