META HAS DECIDED TO PAY TRUMP $25M TO SETTLE THE ACCOUNT BAN DISPUTE

Meta has agreed to pay President Donald Trump $25 million to resolve a lawsuit he filed in 2021, alleging wrongful censorship by Facebook and Instagram after the January 6 Capitol riot. The Wall Street Journal initially reported this settlement, which is viewed as a victory for Trump.

Sources familiar with the deal indicated that $22 million of the payment will be allocated to fund Trump’s future presidential library, while the remaining amount will cover legal fees and compensation for other plaintiffs involved in the case. In the settlement, Meta will not acknowledge any wrongdoing regarding the suspension of Trump’s accounts. A Meta spokesperson confirmed the settlement to AFP.

Trump has frequently criticized social media companies for suspending his accounts following the insurrection and for his remarks perceived as supportive of the violence. However, he has recently made efforts to reconnect with tech leaders, including Zuckerberg and X owner Elon Musk, both of whom attended Trump’s recent presidential inauguration in Washington.

Zuckerberg has shown support for Trump and has adjusted Meta’s policies to reduce restrictions on certain content across its platforms, which include Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp. He stated that Meta is "restoring free expression on our platforms," and recently announced a rollback of fact-checking operations after reportedly dining with Trump at his Florida estate in November.

This settlement marks another instance of media companies adapting to the prospect of a second Trump presidency. In December, for example, ABC News agreed to a $15 million settlement to resolve a defamation lawsuit Trump filed over comments made by a prominent anchor.

Earlier on Wednesday, Meta reported a 59% increase in net income, reaching $62.36 billion for the year.
