Watch | US F-35 fighter jet crashes in Alaska, pilot makes safe exit

A U.S. Air Force F-35 fighter jet crashed during a training exercise at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska on Tuesday. Fortunately, the pilot successfully ejected from the aircraft and is reported to be safe.

Footage of the crash circulated widely on social media, depicting the plane descending, flipping over, and ultimately crashing. According to Col. Paul Townsend, commander of the 354th Fighter Wing, the pilot experienced an "inflight malfunction" but was able to eject during the landing phase.

The pilot declared an inflight emergency prior to the incident and is currently in stable condition at a medical facility. The crash, which happened in the early afternoon, resulted in substantial damage to the jet. The Air Force has announced that a thorough investigation will be conducted to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Eielson Air Force Base is located approximately 25 miles south of Fairbanks.

Eielson Air Force Base was selected in 2016 to accommodate 54 F-35s. This expansion involved a cost of over half a billion dollars, which included the construction of 36 new buildings, a number of housing units, and the addition of around 3,500 active-duty airmen and their families.

In May 2024, an F-35 crashed while en route from Texas to Edwards Air Force Base near Los Angeles after refueling in New Mexico, resulting in serious injuries to the pilot, who was taken to a hospital.

Additionally, an investigation in October last year determined that an F-35 pilot had ejected unnecessarily, causing the aircraft to fly unmanned for 11 minutes before crashing in rural South Carolina in 2023.

The F-35 is an advanced fighter jet developed by Lockheed Martin as part of a family of stealth aircraft for the U.S. and allied forces. It is designed to perform a wide range of missions and is equipped with cutting-edge technology. The F-35 has a flight endurance of over 12 hours, allowing it to reach nearly any location in the Northern Hemisphere in a single mission.
