Police Eliminate Five Suspected Kidnappers in Ogun
The Ogun State Police Command has announced that its officers have neutralized five suspected kidnappers along the Lagos/Ibadan expressway. This was confirmed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, in a statement issued in Abeokuta, the state capital.
Odutola reported that the Area Commander in Sagamu received an urgent call from travelers on the expressway about an armed robbery taking place near Ilishan. Responding promptly, the Area Commander assembled a specialized team of officers to investigate.
“Upon arrival, officers found that a group of unidentified gunmen had created a roadblock using a large truck, indiscriminately firing at unarmed passengers, which caused widespread panic,” she stated.
“During the chaos, three commuters—Bolaji Bilesanmi, 65; Olasunkanmi Idowu, 50; and Mohammed Salisu—were kidnapped from two vehicles: a Honda Pilot registered as Lagos EKY113GZ and a Honda Accord with the registration Lagos KJA13QFA.”
According to her, the state Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, ordered a covert operation led by the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit. On January 29, 2025, around 4:00 AM, operatives located the kidnappers’ hideout. When the gang spotted the police team, they engaged in a fierce gun battle, resulting in five kidnappers sustaining fatal injuries, while others escaped with gunshot wounds.
Recovered items from the suspects included one AK-47 rifle, ten rounds of 5.6mm caliber ammunition, ₦5.2 million believed to be from criminal activities, and three mobile phones.
"The three kidnapped victims were rescued unharmed, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the injured members of the syndicate. The Commissioner of Police has issued a strong warning against criminal activities, particularly targeting young individuals seeking financial gain through high-profile crimes. He reiterated the Command’s steadfast commitment to severely crack down on criminals who prey on innocent citizens in Ogun State," she concluded.
